Two of my favorite things are writing and art.
Now that I have my degree in Advertising and Public Relations, I can read a novel during some free time and I no longer think, “Is there something I should be studying instead?” I have made many more trips to the bookstore since graduation, written more poems, and become inspired to write short stories based on the years of journals I’ve been keeping.
As for art, I am a bit of a crafty person. I enjoy drawing, but I also like working in 3-D, as in ceramics, paper models of anything from an eyeshadow box to my dream house, and pop-up cards. Last year I bought a crochet book and learned the basics, then made a little envelope purse with a button closure, a few granny squares, and a few flowers.
There are two things I like to see in writing and art: simplicity and detail. Those two words don’t seem to go together, but there is a point where both come together just right. Details shouldn’t muddle the work. They should enhance the message just enough for the viewer to have a clear understanding, all gaps filled. They should allow an image to catch attention and linger in a person’s mind. With all the words and images that fill a person from day to day, sometimes that’s a challenge.
We’re all inspired by challenge. This is mine.
